Introducing the Bridges to Healing Children’s Series
“How does one explain combat trauma to small children whose hearts are already hurting?” – Jocelyn Green
In answer to her own question, Jocelyn wrote,“‘My Hero’s Home!!’ is an inviting, easy-to-use tool full of stories, cartoons, activities, and more, all designed to gently guide and encourage young children whose parents may have combat trauma. Invaluable.” Jocelyn is the author of “Faith Deployed: Daily Encouragement for Military Wives” and co-author of “The 5 Love Languages Military Edition” (with Dr. Gary Chapman).
“Please get us something to help the children; they’re getting lost.”
This was the cry of chaplains from all branches of service when Cru Military asked, “How can we help you?” With a passion to help military children, Sherry Barron, used her experience as a military wife, mother, educator and author to write this new series of books for children whose parents may have combat trauma. Christ-centered, positive and practical tools and information are creatively set in the age-appropriate books. All three books are enriched with illustrations by animator and storyteller, Nick Adducci (BangarangAnimation.com). Each book in the series follows the topical structure of the highly praised book “When War Comes Home” by Chris and Rahnella Adsit and Marshéle Carter Waddell.
“My Hero’s Home!! A Guide for Young Children Whose Parents May Have Combat Trauma” is an activity and coloring book that tells the story of Cody and Carrie, and their dog Abby, whose daddy has come home from a deployment overseas. This story gives young children a voice to be able to express their fears and concerns when their own parent is dealing with Combat Trauma. Included are fun activities to do, Bible verses to learn and a guide a parent can use in answering their child’s questions.
“Love, love, love this great activity book which explains to kids on their level about the struggles of PTSD within a family. The bonus is the empowerment of Scripture to give hope in times of sadness and loneliness. This book gives them a voice.” Shannon Morell, MS, Military Prevention Specialist
“Helping My Hero!! A Guide for Young Readers Whose Parents May Have Combat Trauma” is a wonderfully illustrated book for 4th-6th graders, which tells the stories of two families from the points of view of their children. Helpful information answers questions the child may have; questions that they may not even be able to express. Each chapter contains Scripture verses and prayers, suggestions for positive activities, and ways they can apply what they are learning.
“‘Battle Ready!!’ This war cry for many a parent preparing to deploy can now be applied to any child who is also facing a parent’s deployment or return from combat. ‘Helping My Hero!!’ is an outstanding book that provides a unique blend of story, facts, practical tools and activities to help 4th-6th grade children understand what PTSD is and how it affects their parents and families.” Stephen Duke, Lt Col USMC
“My Hero Hurts!! A Study Guide for Teenagers Whose Parents May Have Combat Trauma” provides concrete information which teens want to understand as their families struggle through the ripple effects of a parent’s Combat Trauma. Each chapter presents a unique story of families facing the varied issues caused by PTSD or TBI. Solid facts and application points are paired with questions
teens can use in small groups or one-on-one with their peers. Biblical principles are presented through key verses, prayer, and Bible study. Suggestions for personal reflection, family “talk-times” and community outreach provide a well-rounded approach to this difficult subject.
“If you have a parent who has been in a combat zone, and they seem to be struggling with some of their experiences ‘downrange,’ this book is a must for you. It will give you a realistic perspective on their struggles, add to your own personal resilience as a combat veteran’s kid, and give you practical ways to partner with God to actually help them heal.” Chris Adsit, author of “The Combat Trauma Healing Manual”
